Frequently Asked Questions

Beltpack

How can I power my beltpack?

Your beltpack can be powered by any device that supplies Power over Ethernet according to the standards IEEE 802.3af, IEEE 802.3at or IEEE 802.3bt

How many beltpacks can I have in a system?

There is no maximum to the number of beltpacks in a system.

Can I connect any headset?

All punQtum units accept single and double muff headsets, with both dynamic and electret microphones.

What are the pin connections on the XLR-4 headset connector?

Pin 1: Mic – (GND)

Pin 2: Mic + (+5.8 V electret power)

Pin 3: Headphone -

Pin 4: Headphone +

Speaker Station

How many speaker stations can I have in a system?

There is no maximum to the number of stations.

What kind of gooseneck microphone can be fitted to the Q210 P Speaker Station?

The Q210 P accepts the punQtum Q930 gooseneck microphone. This is an electret microphone that is specially designed for the Q210 P. punQtum does not supply a dynamic gooseneck micropohone.

Can I run a Q210 P on Power over Ethernet?

No, the Q210 P must be powered by the supplied AC power adaptor.

Does the Q210P supply power on all four ports?

No, the Q210 P only supplies power on the two ports labelled PoE+. The other two ports are unpowered ports.

Can I daisy chain speaker stations?

Speaker Stations are always powered by their local AC adaptor. The Q210P has four ethernet connectors, of which two provide power for up to four beltpacks.

What audio levels does Q210 P handle on its audio inputs and outputs?

Audio inputs and outputs have a maximum level of +18dBu.

Connectivity

How can I connect networked audio to my system?

You can connect AES67 audio to the punQtum system. You can receive program feeds or send intercom output as AES67 streams

How can I connect analog audio to a Speaker Station?

Each punQtum Q210 P Speaker Station has two 4-wire interfaces that you may freely configure to Input and Output analog audio signals. You may use these signals to connect to the Audio I/O of your analog units.

Network & Cabling

Do you have a list of network switches approved by punQtum?

No, your switch needs to support QoS and IGMP snooping is preferred.

Can I connect punQtum to the same network as my audio and video systems?

Yes, but it is advised to have punQtum working on a dedicated network, or a dedicated VLAN within your network.

How many beltpacks can be powered via the Q210 P Speaker Station?

The Q210 P can supply power to four beltpacks on each of the two ports, these are labelled with “PoE+”.

How many beltpacks may I daisy chain?

On an IEEE 802.3at power supply you may daisy chain up to four beltpacks. Using an IEEE 802.3bt power supply you may daisy chain up to eight beltpacks. Cable quality and length may affect the maximum number of beltpacks.  Use high quality CAT cable and, for example, AWG23 type cable to achieve the best results.

What is the best type of cable?

CAT5 cable will work but CAT6 is preferred.

Can I use any type of CAT5 or CAT6 cable?

Yes, but keep in mind that low quality cable may affect the maximum cable length and the number of units in a daisy chain.

Do I need shielded cable?

No, but but shielded cable may give better results with less chance of network interference. We recommend the following cable types, in order of preference:

  • Shielded cable with braided overall shield and foil shielded pairs (S/FTP)
  • Shielded cable with foil and braided overall shield and no shielded pairs (SF/UTP)
  • Shielded cable with foil overall shield no shielded pairs (F/UTP)
  • Shielded cable with foil shield per pair, no overall shield (U/FTP)
  • Shielded cable with no shield (U/UTP)

What is the maximum cable length?

Each cable run may be a maximum of 100 meters (300 feet). In the case of daisy chained beltpacks, power loss at the cable may limit the maximum cable length. Use high quality CAT cable and, for example, AWG23 type cable to achieve the best results.

Can I run beltpacks over a WiFi connection?

No, punQtum intercom does not work on WiFi. WiFi connections are not reliable enough and introduce too much delay (latency)

Software

What is Q-Tool?

Q-Tool is a smart configuration tool that makes your system easier to set up and control. You do not need to have it running once your intercom system is configured to your needs.

Do I need the configuration software Q-Tool?

No, the punQtum units are Plug & Play; if you connect beltpacks to a network with PoE then the beltpacks will work. However, for more advanced features you will need to use Q-Tool.
